The Enneagram describes nine character types; two types may behave in the same way, but the underlying motivation is different. During our childhood we develop coping strategies to avoid pain and disappointment, in an attempt to protect ourselves. Each type has a distinct way of seeing the world and an underlying motivation, which powerfully influences the way we think and behave, known as our default thinking and behaviour.
The goal of understanding your type is not to erase or replace your personality with a new one. It is to develop self-knowledge and learn how to recognise personality traits, which limit us in order to re-discover our essence or true selves. By confronting our compulsions and fixations, we can move beyond the self-defeating dimensions of our personality and grow in compassion for ourselves and others, thus more able to enjoy enriching relationships.
To change may be painful and demanding, and the process of self-understanding is often avoided, however it can be the beginning of the inner journey, which may lead to healing and enlightenment.
It is always good to read around a subject and for further information about the Enneagram we recommend you take a look at The Narrative Enneagram and The Enneagram Institute. A great introductory book for deeper understanding is The Road Back to You by Cron and Stabile.
Enneagram in Practice runs courses which can be booked for individuals, couples and friends. If required we can tailor a course specifically for friendship, family, work or church groups.
Courses are in person but can also be delivered online if there is the demand. Please see our courses page for more information.
